This bell was on the “Harriet Lane,” one of the ships of the federal fleet captured at the Battle of Galveston, January 1, 1863, by Confederate forces under General J. Bankhead Magruder. Commodore Leon Smith, the commander of the Confederate fleet, barricaded three steamboats with cotton bales. It was one of the most brilliant and decisive victories of the Civil War.
